THE ESSENTIAL SALT
During prolonged extreme endurance sports (such as ultramarathons, triathlons, pentathlons, and ultrarunning), you lose a significant amount of water, salt, and minerals, especially in hot weather. Your body primarily loses sodium and chloride, and to a lesser extent, magnesium. Although your body can be rehydrated with water, the essential salts it needs cannot be replaced, which can affect your electrolyte balance.
